Week 2: Experimental Animation

Jibaro is an allegorical presentation of the themes of colonisation and aboriginality, misunderstanding and redress.
“Sound” and “water” are the key elements of the film, which support the central idea of the story.
Firstly, the director uses ‘sound’ to create the sounds of nature that represent the indigenous environment.
There are two levels: the first, the nature of flowing water and birdsong, which corresponds to the original state of the indigenous people in the forest.
The second layer is a ‘variation’ of the sounds of nature – the murderous cries of the water demons, attacking the Spanish colonists.
The dress, gesture and ‘shout’ of the water demon are clear indications of the identity of the Siren, born of an ancient legendary culture, distinguishing her from the more ‘theocratic’ Christianity that followed, with its symbolic significance for the ‘ancient and primitive civilisation’. The symbolism of the “ancient and primitive civilisation”.

Water flow, on the other hand, is an extension of sound and is also divided into two levels.
For much of the text, ‘water’ appears as the first level of ‘sound’, the gurgling sound of a river flowing by, and naturally has the same meaning.
Particular attention is paid to the ‘underwater’ sounds: most of them are isolated, almost like what a deaf knight would hear if he lost his hearing. The second layer, however, is the final passage, in which a red river, mixed with bright blood, rushes angrily towards the Spanish deaf knight. This is equated with the cry of the water demon, a furious reckoning with the colonists.
The director sets up three narrative stages in the work, beginning with “the first attack of the Aborigines on the colonists”, progressing to “the misunderstanding of the colonists’ intentions” and finally coming to “the removal of the misunderstanding, the total resistance “. Voice” and “water” are the key tricks that drive the three stages.

Week 2: About the collaborative.

In this week’s lesson on cooperation, the teacher used two interesting games to make us fully understand the importance of cooperation. The first game involved folding a piece of paper into three parts and having different people come and talk to each of the three parts to make one final piece. I really enjoyed this game as we saw how different ideas could come together to make something interesting.

The second game was where we wrote three rules to use to create a game and then we could play the game that different groups had made.

After school, our group got together and discussed some relevant topics and the final presentation, our group included vfx and 3d animation students.

Week 2: Mech Arm

In this lesson we learnt to make robotic arms, bindings and simple animations. I tried to make the details realistic as if they were realistic and I learnt a new lesson about how to duplicate animations and models together, which was very useful.

Final Major Project & Thesis

Week 1: FMP thesis proposal

  • On graduation which area or environment of production do you wish to focus upon and why?

When I graduate, I want to continue my studies in the field of 3D computer animation, I have been learning about 3D computer animation from my undergraduate to postgraduate studies and I love it so much that I will make it my career.

  • What skills will you need to attain the standards required for vocational practice?

At the animation stage, the industry would divide it into steps and I would like to focus on developing the camera as well as the lighting part of it, I think I need more expertise knowledge about these two parts and continue to learn and hopefully reach the industry standard.

  • How will you showcase your FMP practice for the final shows?

Firstly, for the final project, I would definitely use video expression, and secondly I would want to use techniques in it that have not been used before, such as special effects, and for the story, have some realistic critique.

  • Is it important to directly connect the thesis research to your practical work?

I think it is important that the dissertation will lead me to some good teaching references and will help me to summarise and standardise some of my professional knowledge and skills.

  • Do you have an area of research you wish to conduct that is unrelated to practical element?

In fact, I would love to study the gap between foreign animation and Chinese animation, not only technically, but also in terms of story and audience orientation. I don’t know if this is considered relevant to the content of my practice, but mainly I would like to study Pixar’s animation, the creativity of the story, the depth.

Week 1: About the first collaborative meeting

On Wednesday evening we had our first discussion about collaboration in different disciplines. I am studying 3d computer animation and for the final form of collaboration I would like to continue using video, I would like to be able to work with vfx’s or games because I would like to improve my post effects or use different software for rendering, I think it would be interesting.

I was lucky enough to end up meeting a student from vfx who could help me with effects and rendering, and we looked at each other’s portfolios and saw the possibility of working together. We’re going to have a workshop next week to talk about which theme to choose, what format, etc.

Week 1: 3 ideas

Using the camera this week, I posed for some shots in maya, which will feature ideas as well as shots I want to use on my final graduation design.

The first story is about romance and will use some medium shots.

The second story is about rockets and space, and the interesting thing is that I replaced the astronaut with a dog, and I used some interesting film footage.

The third story is about fighting, and I used Transformers and Blackbeard from One piece, a contrast between a large and a small character that I liked, and I used a lot of over-the-shoulder shots, as well as big perspective shots.

Summary

Through more than a month of writing and researching the report, I finally completed a discussion on ai painting, its differences from human artists, its strengths and weaknesses, ideas for future development, and the final conclusion, and finally a presentation to explain the problems encountered and things learned in the process.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqj5XAm9PDo

Writing my first report was a big challenge for me, to be honest I was confused and even a little scared of this course at first, before this I had only written essays on my short films as an undergraduate student, so I thought it would be very hard for me, at first when the teacher asked us to come up with a subject of interest, I’ve been thinking about the AI painting, because it’s been so hot these last two or three years and some of his work has been amazing to me. At the very beginning, my topic was: can AI painting replace human artists, I explained my idea to my teacher via email and in class, and my professor’s suggestion was that the topic was a good one, but it was too wide and it would be hard for me to prove in report whether it was possible to substitute ai paint for human artists, so I narrowed it down and It was changed to the differences between the painting of the ai painting and the human artists and the advantages and disadvantages.
In the process of writing, in order to really explore ai painting, I studied some of the websites of ai painting and really felt the power and drawbacks of ai painting. As an animation student, we need to draw concept drawings, scene design, colorkey, which are relatively professional, challenging and time consuming images of drawing in the pre-project stage, and the birth of the ai painting, which can help me Of course, even the most powerful ai is based on the human mind, it will always learn, put together, and it has no way to produce anything new at all, yes, it is very powerful, but there is still a long way to go before it can take the place of the artist who is a human being. it is a very powerful thing to do.
During the writing of this report, I learned a lot, such as what the methodology is, how to validate my thesis, how to find examples to support my ideas, and the use of the literature, I think the process of learning about them is more important, it will enhance some of my thinking, for example, through the ual library I have collected many papers on AI painting, It was a long process and I spent a great deal of time doing research and reading, which was a crucial stage and I really enjoyed the process.
I suspect that what I learned in this class, and the process of writing report, will help me in the future, and may be of great help to me in my dissertation.

About Report

As a 3D animation student, my major is closely related to film, so in the process of writing my REPORT, I watched some films as well as videos about ai, which helped me a lot to understand more about ai and even answer some questions with the perspective of ai, such as how ai painting can help human art now and how the future of ai painting will develop.

I searched online for websites on how to use ai painting and watched some instructional videos before I started making ai paintings myself, and in my essay I have put in the failures I made using ai painting.

About Report

At the very beginning, after deciding on the topic I wanted to explore, I first decided on the table of contents and the topics for each chapter. For ai painting, which is a new field, I needed to first explain to the reader what it is and how it works, and I even studied ai painting specifically for this purpose, which was an interesting process that not only turned some of my traditional ideas about ai painting upside down, but also taught me new skills. It was very beneficial.

For the citation part of my essay, I mainly looked up ual library and google scholar. At the very beginning, the books and literature found in ual library did not satisfy my topic, so I used google scholar to find more literature on ai painting, I noticed that because ai painting has only appeared in recent years. I noticed that because ai painting has only emerged in recent years, most of the literature I found was from more recent years. For the very beginning, I would first focus on their table of contents and abstracts, which would allow me to determine more quickly whether it was suitable for my article.

3D Computer Animation Fundamentals

Summary

Through this semester’s study, I have more in-depth understanding of the basic knowledge of maya, as well as animation principles, through the teacher assigned homework, I more proficient master some operations, especially for the character animation, in the four years of undergraduate study for animation, I think the character animation is the most difficult part, through the first semester of study in lcc, I have more confidence, and for their own I will try to integrate it into my homework, for example, lighting.

Besides showreel ideas, I also met the team and did a team project. In my undergraduate studies, I did a lot of 3D animation shorts, but I had never tried 3D rendering 2D, this was my first collaboration with lcc in the UK, the first short film project, I was mainly responsible for the script, storyboard, scene model, prop model, some material mapping, some character animation, the lighting and rendering and nuke post compositing. I was responsible for the script, storyboarding, scene models, prop models, some texture mapping, some character animation, lighting rendering and nuke post-compositing. I really enjoyed the collaboration and although there were some difficulties along the way, I benefited a lot from it. I am looking forward to working with more people next time to produce more animations.

In addition to this I recorded a presentation to explain in detail what I have learnt this term and what I am looking forward to.
